Dry eye therapy for easier cases are artificial tears/drops 4 to 5 times a day, available at the pharmacies. For somewhat more expressed dryness of the eye, denser artificial tears and gel or ointment artificial tears can be applied.
In modern refractive surgery eye dryness is no longer considered a problem big as it was 10 years ago. Tear film disorders caused by laser correction of dioptre are mild and cause very little interference in the early postoperative period. Modern methods of correction of dioptres which consist of the creation of flaps in LASIK is with femtosecond laser have alleviated the dry eye symptoms, and according to research the duration of the disorder is shortened. Femtolasers allow personalization of size and shape of the flap and positions the flap pinch (which serves as a bridge for the transmission of nerve fibres responsible for normal sensation at the surface of the eye), which significantly reduces primary surgical trauma, and hence the severity of the dry eye disorder. Also, modern treatment with excimer lasers forms a significantly more correct shape of the cornea than before (to some people it is even more correct than their natural cornea) which significantly contributes to better quality smudging of tears over the surface of the eye.
After laser vision correction each patient has a temporary diagnosis of the dry eye. The expected duration of postoperative dryness of the eye is between month and month and a half. After two months dryness of the eye feels very similar to the feeling of day-to-day soft contact lenses wear or long-term computer looking. In most cases, dry eye is treated using artificial tears after laser correction of vision. The function of the goblet cells producing the mucous layer of tears was disturbed due to the position of the lens in the eye for patients who had previously been long-standing contact lens users. With such patients eye dryness can be proven with tests after 6 months. However, very few people feel that dryness or disturbance in everyday life.

It is useful to limit your stay in air-conditioned rooms, smoky and dusty areas and if possible, to minimize computer work or pause while working on your computer. It is also good to reduce the intensity of wearing contact lenses.
An additional approach to alleviating symptoms of dry eye is the retention of natural tears on the surface of the eye as long as possible. This can be achieved by blocking the drainage channels that tear the tears normally drain trough. At the lower edge of our eye there is a smaller channel that drains excess tears in nose. This tear canal can be blocked with thin silicon plugs that can be removed, if necessary. Blocking of the tear canals is done in more equipped ophthalmic clinics like ours and can help some patients solve the problems of the dry eye.
