You drive your car every year to technical inspection, but when was the last time you went to eye examination?
The basic ophthalmologic examination consists of the determination of visual acuity with the dioptre at distance and near, intraocular pressure, examination under a biomicroscope (eyelid, joint, cornea, ocular eyelid, pupils and lenses) and pupil dilation, examination of back segment of the eye (lens, optic nerve, retina and blood vessels).
Do you know:

·      80% of all vision problems can be prevented or cured if you perform regular eye exams
·      39 million people around the world are blind
·      If the eyes were a digital camera, they would have 576 megapixels

Therefore, although you do not have any particular visual disturbances, it is recommended to make a detailed general ophthalmic examination once a year. Every day in the Clinic Svjetlost we perform ophthalmological examinations. What is the general ophthalmic examination and how long it lasts, why it is recommended, are the most common questions of our patients.

The basic ophthalmologic examination consists of the determination of visual acuity with the dioptre at distance and near, eye pressure measurement, examination of the front segment of the eye under microscope (eyelid, joint, cornea, ocular eyelid, pupils and lenses) and pupil dilation, examination of back segment of the eye or the posterior segment (lens, eye nerve, retina and blood vessels).

By checking the eyes often, we can see changes in blood vessels due to high blood pressure, atherosclerosis, diabetic changes, and other neurological problems such as multiple sclerosis, even before the symptoms of these diseases are identified. It is also important to know that eye checking can follow the progression of or successfully treat above-mentioned diseases.

If the eye is healthy and only has dioptre, the patient can be ordered with glasses for distant and near or progressive glasses. The average general ophthalmic examination lasts for about an hour, and the doctor evaluates whether further examinations are needed.

If an ocular disease is found during an examination (inflammation, infection, cataract, dry eye, eyelid problems, yellow spot/macula, diabetic retinopathy, glaucoma, etc.) the patient is being given the therapy or is referred to an ophthalmologist subspecialist to further examination. It is very important to have a pediatric ophthalmologic examination in the early years of life because vision development is known to end up at 8 years of age and that a significant part of vision problems with children can be prevented or cured with good glasses or with a possible surgical procedure.

Because of the dilation of the pupils a few hours after the examination vision can be slightly blurred and therefore it is not recommended to drive the car at that time. Therefore, we recommend taking your escort to your general ophthalmologist at the Clinic Svjetlost.

Find the time to check your eyes because they are your fortune!
