Prof. Maja Bohač, MD, PhD

Professor Maja Bohač , MD, PhD, graduated from the School of Medicine, University of Zagreb, and completed her specialization in ophthalmology under the mentorship of Professor Nikica Gabrić.

She began her training in refractive surgery under the mentorship of Prof. Nikica Gabrić, MD, PhD, with additional training in London, Zurich, Barcelona, Cologne, and Strasbourg.

In her scientific education, Professor Bohač completed postgraduate studies in Biomedicine and Health at the School of Medicine, University of Zagreb.

In April 2017, she defended her doctoral thesis on the topic “Comparison of Mechanical Microkeratomes and Femtosecond Lasers” and earned the title of Doctor of Science.

She obtained the academic title of Associate Professor at the School of Medicine, University of Rijeka, on the topic “Refractive Corneal Surgery” in 2021.

She obtained the academic title of Full Professor at the School of Medicine, University of Rijeka, in 2026.

Professor Bohač performs laser vision correction, cataract surgery, premium intraocular lens implantation, and ICL lens implantation.

Within the Refractive Surgery Department, she is responsible for leading a team of 10 refractive surgeons and introducing new technologies in laser refractive surgery to further improve outcomes.

Her special expertise includes laser procedures on complicated cases—corneal scars and damage, as well as previous refractive procedures of any kind.

Prof. Bohač, MD, PhD, has performed over 30,000 laser procedures to date and actively mentors 14 colleagues.

She has built her knowledge and experience working in Croatia, Serbia, Montenegro, Bosnia and Herzegovina, and North Macedonia, continuously contributing to the development of refractive surgery in the region.

Professor Bohač is among the first physicians in this region to begin using femtosecond lasers.

She is one of the first doctors to perform laser presbyopia correction and the first doctor in the region to perform a new type of laser vision correction—lenticular surgery.

Professor Bohač has published 45 papers indexed in CC, most of them on the treatment of high astigmatism with excimer lasers.

Professor Bohač is a member of the International Society of Refractive Surgery (ISRS), the European Society of Cataract and Refractive Surgeons (ESCRS), the Croatian Society for Cataract and Refractive Surgery, and the Croatian Ophthalmological and Optometric Society.

Prof. Maja Bohač, MD, PhD, is a member of the organizing committee of the Croatian Society for Cataract and Refractive Surgery (CSCRS).

She regularly participates as an active speaker and educator at their annual meetings.
