EASE - a new surface laser vision correction method at Svjetlost Eye Clinic
A femtosecond laser removes the refractive error in a single piece, with no flap and no excimer laser.
Svjetlost Eye Clinic now offers its patients EASE, the newest method of laser vision correction. EASE (Epithelial All-femtosecond Surface Excision) was developed by the German company SCHWIND eye-tech-solutions and is performed with the SCHWIND ATOS® laser. Svjetlost is one of the first clinics in the world to perform the procedure, and Ivan Gabrić, MD was the second surgeon in the world to perform it.
How does EASE work?
EASE combines the precision of lenticular surgery, which patients know from the SmartSight method, with a surface approach. Just beneath the surface of the cornea, the laser shapes a lenticule: a thin layer of tissue created to match the patient’s exact prescription. The surgeon then removes it in a single piece, together with the thin surface layer of the cornea above it. Once the lenticule has been removed, the refractive error is gone.
Conventional surface methods use an excimer laser that vaporises tissue layer by layer. EASE does not vaporise tissue but cuts it out precisely. The procedure requires no corneal flap, as in LASIK, and no incision deep in the cornea, and thanks to anaesthetic eye drops it is completely painless.

Who is EASE suitable for?
EASE is used to correct myopia of up to -12 dioptres, with astigmatism. It is particularly suitable for patients for whom a surface method is recommended: people with thinner corneas, athletes, and those whose occupations make it preferable to avoid a flap. The doctor decides which method is best for each patient after a detailed examination.
What is recovery like?
Recovery is similar to that after other surface procedures. After surgery, a protective contact lens is placed on the eye, and the surface of the eye heals naturally underneath it. Vision is blurred for the first few days, and most patients see well after about a week, when the lens is removed. Vision then continues to sharpen over the following weeks.
Experience presented to the world’s leading experts
In his everyday clinical practice, doctor Ivan Gabrić developed and refined the EASE surgical protocol. He presented the results in September 2026 at the SCHWIND Symposium during the 44th Congress of the European Society of Cataract and Refractive Surgeons (ESCRS) in London. Svjetlost EyeClinic has once again shown that it is among the centres shaping the development of modern refractive surgery.
