Dr. Ivan Gabrić Undergoes Laser Vision Correction

Dr. Ivan Gabrić is one of the leading experts in laser vision correction and works closely with the German company SCHWIND eye-tech-solutions on the development of laser technology. Hans Thomas Wendler, a development engineer at SCHWIND, was instrumental in the development of the ATOS laser, used for the third generation of laser vision correction – lenticule-based surgery.

“I have just operated on the man who is the lead development engineer for this laser. In a way, he is the father of this device. There are currently only about 100 of these lasers in the world, and he chose me and Svjetlost Eye Clinic for his surgery,” said Dr. Gabrić, fully aware of the significance of the moment.

When asked why he had decided to undergo the procedure and whether he was afraid, he gave a brief answer:

“I’m planning to watch television at 8 p.m. tonight and come to work as normal tomorrow,” Gabrić joked.

His colleagues share a similar attitude. Associate Professor Maja Bohač recalled that she underwent laser vision correction herself in 2007. Dr. Ivan Gabrić had his left eye treated in 2011, and now it was time for his right eye.

They kept the atmosphere relaxed with plenty of laughter, demonstrating that they are willing to undergo the very same procedures they perform on their patients – dispelling the myth that doctors “avoid their own procedures.”

After his surgery, Gabrić admitted with a laugh:

“It’s not uncomfortable, but you feel much more than you expect.”

“Next time, we’ll operate on your tongue!” his colleagues joked, encouraging him.
