Prof. Dr. Nikica Gabrić Appears on Briefing
“My success is the success of all my people.”
Prof. Dr. sc. Nikica Gabrić was a guest on Briefing, a program by Jutarnji list.
“To succeed in life, you have to join forces with other people. My success is the success of all the people who work with me. I am simply the person at the helm who has a vision of how it is possible to live without relying on the national healthcare fund, operate in a free market, fulfill a humanitarian and social role, earn a decent living from it, and remain independent of anyone,” said Prof. Gabrić, revealing that until last year he personally performed more than 2,500 surgeries annually, while today he performs between 200 and 300.
Today, surgical procedures and patient examinations are carried out by Prof. Gabrić’s successors – his sons, ophthalmologists Dr. Ivan Gabrić and Dr. Krešimir Gabrić – together with a team of more than 200 associates.
“I train my own doctors,” the professor added, emphasizing that continuity is extremely important in the medical profession while also highlighting the beauty of medicine.
During the interview, Prof. Gabrić discussed healthcare reform, his involvement in politics – which, as he says, “no longer appeals to me in the slightest” – as well as education, Croatia’s workforce, the political situation in the world, and the future.
“I used to think that the world could be changed. Unfortunately, I can change the lives of 200 people, make sure they have a good life, and help them take care of themselves and their families. I cannot change the world,” Prof. Dr. sc. Nikica Gabrić acknowledged candidly, adding that he believes the global order is undergoing significant change.
He also spoke about social developments, conscientious objection, and ethical issues, emphasizing the importance of responsibility in society and in raising children.
The new world order is being created through technology. According to Prof. Gabrić, the development of artificial intelligence poses a potential danger to humanity if we fail to learn how to manage it, as otherwise the human species could become redundant.
“What distinguishes human beings is intellect, skill, and emotion,” said Prof. Nikica Gabrić, calling for empathy and ethics – in the spirit of humanity and progress.
